Vinos en Voz Baja (whispering wines) is a tiny project in Aldeanueva just outside Alfaro at the eastern boundary of Rioja, an area now termed ‘La Rioja Oriental’. Winemaker Carlos Mazo is one of a generation of young, thoughtful producers further driving change towards authenticity and vineyard/terroir specificity. In 2023, Tim Atkin MW anointed Carlos as Rioja Young Winemaker of the Year in 2023, impressed by the elegant, beautifully honest and vibrant wines – the quiet voice of bare bush vines and their line of keepers.
Carlos Mazo ranks as a top 50 producer in Rioja. If you focus on Garnacha, he is making some of the finest in the whole region. Following in the wake of the ground-breaking work of Alvaro Palacios (Palacios Remondo), Carlos takes this work a step further towards a more delicate, transparent, terroir style – his wines will come to define the eastern terroirs of Rioja around Mount Yerga and the Sierra de Los Agudos.
'Nace La Sierra' is a highly unique bottling of a half hectare, single vineyard site called 'Yasa de Las Cuevas'. 70% Tinta Velasco (Graciano de Alfaro) and 30% Pasera (Calagraño) planted between 1950 and 1954 in a 0.56 hectare plot overlooking the Sierra de Los Agudos. The fruit is whole bunch crushed by foot and fermentation is spontaneous without temperature control. Aged 12 months in Italian foudre.
Vineyards: Yasa de Las Cuevas (1950) & (1954). A new planting of massal selected Garnacha and Viura was added in 2022.
“Formerly labeled as Erosivo, Nace La Sierra is one of the most exciting wines from the Rioja Oriental and a shining example of what the sub-region can produce in the right hands. A field blend of Garnacha, Tinta Velsaco and Pasera from a 0.56 hectare plot in Calahorra called Paraje Yasa de Las Cuevas, this has garrigue and mountain herb aromas, wonderful energy and vibrancy, a hint of oak from new Italian foudres, and a racy, ethereal, beautifully balanced finish.” 95 points - Tim Atkin MW, Rioja 2024 Special Report. Selected as one of the finest wines of the year.
