Vinos en Voz Baja (whispering wines) is a tiny project in Aldeanueva just outside Alfaro at the eastern boundary of Rioja, an area now termed ‘La Rioja Oriental’. Winemaker Carlos Mazo is one of a generation of young, thoughtful producers further driving change towards authenticity and vineyard/terroir specificity. In 2023, Tim Atkin MW anointed Carlos as Rioja Young Winemaker of the Year in 2023, impressed by the elegant, beautifully honest and vibrant wines – the quiet voice of bare bush vines and their line of keepers.

Carlos Mazo ranks as a top 50 producer in Rioja. If you focus on Garnacha, he is making some of the finest in the whole region. Following in the wake of the ground-breaking work of Alvaro Palacios (Palacios Remondo), Carlos takes this work a step further towards a more delicate, transparent, terroir style – his wines will come to define the eastern terroirs of Rioja around Mount Yerga and the Sierra de Los Agudos.

Barrio Pastores is a beautifully rendered red from 100% bush vine Garnacha, aged in large, old oak barrels. Just 2000 bottles made.

Vineyards: Mazaterón (1989), Montote (1989).

"Barrio Pastores - the shepherd's quarter in Spanish - comes from two vineyards in the lower part of Aldeanueva close to the river. Entirely aged in foudres, it's a detailed, elegant, foot-trodden Rioja Oriental red with aromas of violet, fennel and white pepper, caressing tannins and a core of pomegranate and wild strawberry fruit." 95 points - Tim Atkin, MW. *Selected as one of the finest Rioja wines of the year.
