Tiberio is one of Italy's most celebrated wine estates — and one of the producers we are most privileged to offer in Australia. The story begins in 2000, when Riccardo Tiberio — then export manager for a well-known Abruzzo winery — stumbled across an eight-hectare plot of ancient Trebbiano Abruzzese vines near the medieval hillside town of Cugnoli. So rare and extraordinary were these vines that Riccardo quit his job on the spot and purchased them, along with 31 surrounding hectares. His instinct was correct: Trebbiano Abruzzese is a fundamentally different — and vastly superior — variety to the Trebbiano Toscano that had been mistakenly planted across much of Abruzzo, and these were among the oldest examples in the region. Today, Tiberio is run by Riccardo's children — Antonio, who leads viticulture, and Cristiana, who handles winemaking. Cristiana is one of Italy's most admired young winemakers: a chemistry graduate who has trained in Champagne, Chablis and the Mosel, and whose approach to winemaking — uncompromising, precise, rooted in the character of place — has brought Tiberio to the forefront of Italian wine. The Trebbiano Abruzzese is the soul of the estate. The entry-level Trebbiano d'Abruzzo is described by Vinous as "one of the most overlooked and underrated wines in the Tiberio portfolio" — high praise given the rest of the range. Above it sits Fonte Canale — the single-vineyard flagship from near 100-year-old massal-selected vines, described as one of the greatest white wines in Italy: chiselled, crystalline and capable of ageing for decades. Tiberio is equally celebrated for Pecorino — described by Ian d'Agata as "the undisputed quality leader" for the variety — and for four exceptional Montepulciano-based wines including the thrilling Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, one of the finest rosé-style wines in the country. These are allocation wines. Stock is strictly limited — get in touch to join the list.
