Grignolino is one of Piedmont's oldest and most characterful grape varieties — and one of the least known outside Italy. That's exactly why we love it. Grown primarily in the Monferrato hills of Piedmont, Grignolino produces wines that confound expectations. Pale in colour — sometimes almost rosé-like — with a distinctive orange-brick hue, it belies a wine of real structure and grip. The tannins are fine but plentiful, the acidity bright, and the aromatics uniquely its own: red berries, herbs, white pepper and an earthy, almost tannic bitterness that makes it one of the most food-friendly varieties in Italy. These are wines that reward curiosity. Grignolino is not a variety that announces itself loudly — it requires attention, the right food and an open mind. Those who take the time invariably become devoted. If you love wines of finesse over power — alpine Nebbiolo, Pinot Noir, Trousseau, Poulsard — Grignolino deserves a place in your glass.
