Cantine Garrone is one of the most remarkable wine stories in Italy — and one of the most important for Nebbiolo. Founded in 1921 by Luigi Garrone in Val d'Ossola — Piedmont's northernmost valley, wedged between Switzerland to the west and Lake Maggiore to the east — the estate is now run by Luigi's grandsons Piermario and Roberto alongside Roberto's sons Marco and Matteo. Four generations, one mission: to preserve and elevate the wines of this wild, inaccessible corner of the Italian Alps. At the heart of everything is Prünent — often thought of as the oldest type of Nebbiolo, documented in written records as far back as 1309, and found growing nowhere else on earth. Many of the vines are ungrafted and up to 200 years old, in forests, on ancient terraces and in pairs alongside curves in the road. In the 1990s, recognising that many local farmers were struggling to sustain any viable commercial activity, the Garrone family launched a community initiative — today working with over forty local growers to combine their precious fruit and save this centuries-old tradition from extinction.
The wines are extraordinary. Prünent is made from the oldest vine material, producing Nebbiolo of finesse, verticality and haunting mountain freshness — cool-fruited, fine-boned and unlike anything from the Langhe or Valtellina. The estate's two Prünent bottlings — the multi-parcel Nebbiolo Superiore and the single-vineyard Diecibrente from 90-year-old vines — are finding their way onto the finest restaurant lists in the world. Alongside them, Munaloss blends Croatina to the picture, adding a shade of alpine darkness into one of the greatest value Nebbiolo reds we have ever tasted. Matteo and Marco Garrone are the young masters of this ancient variety and land. Volumes are tiny and we take what we can get.
