"Antoniolo remains a reference point for Gattinara and Alto Piemonte. As always, the Castelle and San Francesco have a touch of French oak sheen that renders the wines very easy to enjoy on the young side. The Osso San Grato is aged entirely in cask and, therefore, has more classic lines. It remains one of the benchmark wines of Gattinara and Alto Piemonte. As good as the single-vineyard bottlings are, readers should not pass up the straight Gattinara, which is now also released as a Riserva. It’s a fine introduction to this stellar range." – Vinous

Sourced from a 3.5-hectare, single-vineyard cru planted in 1960 at 390 meters above sea level, San Francesco is 100% Nebbiolo grown on a mosaic of igneous and metamorphic soils—granite, quartz, iron, and mineral sands left by ancient glaciers. Fermentation is spontaneous, with an 18-day maceration in concrete vats and no temperature control. The wine then matures for 18 months in mostly used French oak tonneaux, followed by another 18 months in large Slavonian oak casks (25–35HL), and completes its élevage with a further 12 months of bottle refinement.

"A rich red, with good cut and hints of truffle, mineral and woodsy funk shading a core of cherry and raspberry fruit. Harmonious and firm, extending on the long, iron-tinged aftertaste. Ready to enjoy, yet should age at least another decade. Drink now through 2035. 300 cases made" 94 points – Wine Spectator
