Sassara Vini is a suprise package — a rare biodynamic estate at the southern end of the Bardolino DOC near Lake Garda, producing truly soulful wines that are a world away from the commercial output the region is known for. The estate is run by Alessia Bertaiola, an agricultural researcher, and her husband Stefano, a third-generation winemaker whose family has worked the complex soils of Monte Mamaor for over fifty years. Alessia and Stefano took full control in 2007 and immediately converted the vineyards to organic and biodynamic farming. Their 14 hectares include 10 of certified vines and the rest given over to olive groves and woodlands — a genuinely biodiverse estate. The soils here are extraordinary — a mix of ancient ocean bed and morainic sediment left by glacial activity, rich in quartz, granite, calcite and alabaster. The old vines — many 60 to 70 years old — work these complex soils with roots that go deep, producing fruit of remarkable concentration and mineral precision. The red range works with the traditional Bardolino varieties: Corvina, Rossanella, Rondinella and Molinara. The whites use Fernanda, Moscato, Trebbianello, Trebbiano, Garganega and Tocai — all spontaneously fermented without temperature control, with minimal sulphur and no fining or filtration. These are wines bursting with pure juice, minerality and what La Carta Wine calls "a lust for life." Through Sassara and their vivacious countru wines, you quickly realise that the past is, in fact, the future.
