Rainoldi is one of Valtellina's benchmark estates — a family winery with roots going back to 1925, when Aldo Rainoldi began as a wine merchant in the valley. Three generations later, his grandson Aldo returned after completing his studies in viticulture and oenology to continue the family tradition, combining qualitative ambition with a deep respect for the environment and the extraordinary terroir of the region. Based in Chiuro, Rainoldi farms 11 hectares across three of Valtellina's great sub-zones — Sassella, Grumello and Inferno — producing wines that are a benchmark reference for what this Alpine appellation can achieve. Each sub-zone has its own distinct character. Sassella — the most mineral and iron-rich, with vineyards between 290 and 630 metres — produces wines of haunting elegance and salty precision. Grumello, centred on the ancient Castel Grumello, gives wines of particular freshness and fruit. Inferno — the smallest and steepest, spanning three municipalities — produces Valtellina's most full-bodied and tannic expressions, wines of exuberant power and austerity. At the top of the pyramid sits the Sforzato (Sfursat) — made from partially-dried Chiavennasca grapes — a wine of extraordinary concentration, complexity and alpine intensity that rewards extended cellaring. These are wines that remind you why Valtellina matters. Deeply expressive of their mountain terroir, built for the long term and priced far below what equivalent quality costs elsewhere. We have tasted Rainoldi's Sassella back to the 1950s, they were unbelieveable wines – most Barolo won't get near that.
