Maugeri is one of the most exciting white wine estates in Italy — and one of the most compelling stories in the current Etna revolution. In 2014, sisters Carla, Michela and Paola Maugeri joined their father Renato on a mission to reclaim and recalibrate the family's old vineyards on the eastern slopes of Mount Etna in Milo — the only area in Etna where the Bianco Superiore designation can be used. What followed was an extraordinary amount of work: reforming over 83 terraces of lava dry-stone walls across seven hectares, replanting in the traditional Alberello Etneo (bush-vine) technique, and engaging renowned Etna enologist Emiliano Falsini to guide the winemaking. Their first commercial vintage was released in 2020. The vineyards stretch between Contrada Volpare and Contrada Praino at 700 metres above sea level, enclosed within an unbroken line of lava dry-stone walling and constantly washed by sea breezes from the Ionian coast below. The soils are sandy volcanic — decomposed lava of extraordinary fertility and mineral complexity. This is one of the great white wine terroirs on earth. At the heart of the range is Carricante — the indigenous Sicilian variety that is the soul of Etna Bianco Superiore. In the hands of Maugeri and Falsini it produces wines of haunting mineral precision, wet stone, citrus and wild herb character, with a structure and acidity built for serious ageing. The Contrada Volpare, the single-vineyard Frontebosco and the maritime-influenced Frontemare each express a distinct face of this extraordinary terroir. Alongside the whites, a small production Nerello Mascalese Rosato — from just one hectare of bush vines — is among the most refined and compelling rosés we have tasted from anywhere in Italy. These are wines from a young estate that is already producing at the highest level. Robert Camuto identified Carla Maugeri as one of the producers to watch in Wine Spectator. We agree entirely.
