L'Erta di Radda is one of Chianti Classico's most quietly brilliant estates — and one of the best value propositions in Italian fine wine today. The project belongs to Diego Finocchi, who at the age of 24 purchased five hectares of steep, organically farmed vineyards on the northern slopes of Radda in Chianti — next door to the legendary Montevertine estate. The name says it all: 'erta' means steep slope, and these vineyards, positioned at cool altitude to a north/north-east facing aspects, these are among the most rewarding sites in the entire appellation. The vineyards are planted predominantly to Sangiovese, with an important percentage of native Canaiolo — traditionally used to balance Sangiovese's natural astringency. The soils are a mix of Galestro (shale-like marine clay) and Alberese (sandy limestone rock), certified organic, hand-harvested and spontaneously fermented. Ageing takes place in large untoasted French oak botti — no barrique, no internationalisation of the wines. The results have been recognised at the highest level. The 2021 Chianti Classico received the Gambero Rosso 3 Bicchieri award — the most prestigious recognition in Italian wine — and 93 points from Antonio Galloni of Vinous, who described it as "a wine of real character and personality that captures all the pedigree of this great vintage." Walter Speller of Jancis Robinson placed L'Erta di Radda in his Grand Cru classification of Chianti — a remarkable achievement for a small, one-man operation. The owner of Radda's finest enoteca, Casa Porciatti, puts it best: "Diego puts far too much work into his Classico — the fruit is just too good for a Classico!"
