La Jasse Castel is a powerhouse, one woman estate — and one of the bravest wine projects we know. Pascale Rivière was a journalist, teacher and writer before falling in love at first sight with her first vines — on the highest point of the Causse de Montpeyroux, alongside a 17th century barn. That was 1997. Since then, her 11 hectares project of organically farmed plots across key sites in Terrasses du Larzac and Montpeyroux have become one of the most celebrated small estates in the Languedoc. The vineyards are as poetic as the story. A century-old Cinsault on the terraces of Arboras. An ancient Carignan tucked away amongst the olivettes. A purebred Syrah at the foot of an oak forest. Gobelet-trained Grenache in the heart of the Seranne landscape. All farmed organically since 2008, certified by Ecocert, with yields between 15 and 25 hl/ha — some of the lowest in the Languedoc. Every grape is harvested by hand in small baskets, sorted, and fermented with slow, long extraction of up to five weeks. The range spans four reds, two whites and a rosé — each named for its own character. La Jasse (Syrah-dominant, from clay soils, firm tannins and astonishing freshness), Les Combariolles (Grenache on arid, stony terrain, deep and age-worthy), Bleu Velours (all the old vines of Montpeyroux, aged in barrel), La Pimpanela (a blend of all four varieties, balanced and full-flavoured). The white L'Egrisée and the extraordinary El Abanico — an outrageous deeply-oaked white from a tiny plot of mixed varieties at 400 metres — just two small barrels are made.
Pascale also founded Vinifilles in 2009 — a highly respected association of female-led, family-run domains across Languedoc-Roussillon. She is a determined, impressive woman with remarkable conviction and passion, crafting luscious wines. It shows in every bottle.
