Freisa is one of Piedmont's oldest and most beguiling grape varieties — and one of the hardest to find outside Italy. That's precisely why we love championing it. Grown in the hills around Turin and throughout Piedmont, Freisa is believed to be an ancient ancestor of Nebbiolo, and the family resemblance is there in the glass — aromatic, perfumed, with bright acidity and a distinctive tannic grip. But Freisa has its own unmistakable personality: wild strawberry, raspberry, violet and rose, with an earthy, almost rustic character that makes it one of the most food-friendly and intriguing varieties in the region. Freisa can be made in a range of styles — from dry and structured to lightly frizzante and off-dry — and the best examples reward patience and an open mind. These are wines that taste like nowhere else on earth, made by producers who believe Freisa deserves far more attention than it gets. If you love wines of character over conformity — wines with a story, a place and a personality entirely their own — Freisa is waiting for you.
Although both are made in stainless steel, Claudio Mariotto and Crotin each offer a unique style. Mariotto is a shorter macerated wine from a warmer place, it's super bright, autumnal and lithe. Crotin's Freisa is more structured and serious, with the capacity for aging and the perfect match with richer meals and protein.
