Domaine Sérol is our favourite Gamay producer from the Loire Valley. Stéphane and Carine Sérol are the fifth generation custodians of this biodynamic and organically certified estate in the Côte Roannaise, one of four appellations that make up the Loire Volcanique collective. Their vineyards are densely planted at 8,000–10,000 vines per hectare with Gamay Saint-Romain — an indigenous local biotype with smaller, looser berries than standard Gamay, naturally lower yields and wines of extraordinary freshness, tension and mineral precision. Some vines date to the 1930s. Fermentations are entirely natural, using only indigenous yeasts. The wines are bottled with minimal intervention — vibrant, mineral and alive in a way that larger-scale Gamay simply cannot achieve. Stéphane is renowned across France for his viticultural work and his commitment to sustainability. The estate is carbon neutral, powered by geothermal energy, and was one of the producers through whom Jancis Robinson discovered the Loire Volcanique region. The Gamay range spans entry-level cuvées through to single-vineyard wines of real seriousness — including 'Perdrizière', their most important Gamay cru, and the pétillant naturel Rosé 'Turbullent', one of the most delightful natural sparkling wines we have tasted anywhere. In 2018, the Sérols received Chenin Blanc cuttings from Domaine Huet and François Chidaine — two of the Loire's most celebrated estates — and planted them in a 1.9 hectare vineyard at 400 metres alongside Perdrizière. The resulting Chenin Blanc is one of the most exciting things we stock: exceptional DNA from the Loire's finest estates, granite terroir, Alpine altitude. Pear drops, lemon flower, squeaky lime and salty minerals — a wine that serious white wine drinkers should not overlook. Stéphane is also viticultural partner with Michel Troisgros of Maison Troisgros — one of France's most celebrated restaurants — who co-owns a vineyard with the Sérol family. This is a producer operating at the very highest level.
