Coume del Mas is one of the benchmarks of Roussillon — and one of the producers we are most proud to stock. Founded in 2001 by Philippe and Nathalie Gard on the dramatic schist slopes of the Côte Vermeille, with winemaker Andy Cook joining in the mid-2000s, Coume del Mas has spent over two decades proving what this sun-scorched corner of southern France is truly capable of. Their 15 hectares of gnarly old vines are spread across 32 parcels around Banyuls-sur-Mer and Collioure — an extreme environment where viticulture is almost entirely done by hand on steep terraced slopes that plunge towards the Mediterranean. The dry wines of Collioure are the heart of what we stock. The 'Folio' — 90% Grenache Gris and 10% Grenache Blanc from schist soils, fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged on its lees in barrel — is one of southern France's benchmark white wines. Rich, vibrant and mineral all at once, it is simultaneously an umami delight and a serious age-worthy white that White Burgundy drinkers should seek out immediately. The Collioure reds — driven by old-vine Grenache Noir, Syrah and Carignan — are wines of elegant concentration and Mediterranean depth. And the Banyuls, both oxidative and modern rimage styles, are among the finest sweet wines produced anywhere in France — fortified Grenache of extraordinary complexity and finesse, lower in alcohol and far more elegant than Port. These are wines that have led the way in Roussillon for over twenty years. In our view, they remain the region's finest estate.
