Claudio Mariotto is one of the great champions of Timorasso — the ancient Piedmontese white variety that was nearly extinct before a handful of passionate producers in the Colli Tortonesi brought it back from the brink. Timorasso is now one of Italy's most talked-about white wines, and for good reason. From the chalky-clay hills around Tortona in Piedmont's Alessandria province — historically known as Derthona, a name that appears on many of Mariotto's labels — it produces wines of extraordinary complexity, mineral intensity and longevity. Ripe stone fruit, chamomile and flint on the nose; vibrant acidity, saline texture and a structure built for the cellar on the palate. Mariotto's winery has been in the family since 1921, now in its fourth generation. The vineyards are farmed without pesticides, and the wines are aged on their lees in steel before extended bottle aging — a process that rewards patience and produces wines of genuine depth. If you love white Burgundy, aged Riesling or serious Chenin Blanc, Timorasso will feel like a revelation — and Claudio Mariotto is the benchmark producer to start with. Oh, and he also makes a sublime Freisa!
