"One of the reference-points in Gattinara." — Antonio Galloni, Vinous
"Antoniolo's bottles contain the best of Northern Piedmont's heritage. Hard-boned and only apparently lean, they can survive the decades while making all their greatness immediately obvious." — Gambero Rosso
Established in 1948 by Mario Antoniolo, and today run by his grandchildren Lorella and Alberto, Antoniolo is the benchmark reference for Gattinara — the estate against which all others in the appellation are measured. Their 14 hectares of organically farmed vineyards on volcanic and morainic soils in the Sesia Valley represent some of the most historically significant Nebbiolo land in the world. Antoniolo's contribution to Gattinara goes beyond their wines. In the 1950s, when many local producers were blending other varieties into their Gattinara, Antoniolo were among the first to insist on 100% Nebbiolo. They were also pioneers in releasing single-vineyard cru wines — a decision that laid the foundation for Gattinara's reputation as a serious, terroir-driven appellation. Lorella Antoniolo devoted a decade of her life to chairing the Consorzio of Gattinara producers, fighting for the region's recognition at a time when it needed champions. The cru vineyards are the crown jewels of Alto Piemonte. Osso San Grato — a five-hectare monopole planted between 1940 and 1950, rising to 500 metres on pale, dusty topsoils of clay and mineral sand over igneous volcanic rock — is one of the great Nebbiolo vineyards of the world, producing wines of striking purity and extraordinary longevity. San Francesco and Castelle complete the triumvirate of single-vineyard bottlings, each expressing a distinct face of Gattinara's ancient volcanic terrain. All wines are 100% Nebbiolo, spontaneously fermented in concrete, aged in large Slavonian and French oak botti, and held in bottle beyond the DOC minimum requirements. They are purity incarnate — approachable in their youth but built for decades in the cellar. The entry-level Juvenia, from younger vines, offers an accessible introduction to the house style without compromising on character. These are allocation wines. Stock is strictly limited.
