Monte di Grazia: Amalfi Coast

Monte di Grazia is one of the most extraordinary wine estates we have ever encountered — and one of the most important. Deep in the Lattari Mountains above the Amalfi Coast, in the ancient town of Tramonti, Alfonso Arpino — a local physician — tends 2.7 hectares of vines that are among the oldest in Italy. Many are over 120 years old. Some are approaching 300. All are ungrafted — planted directly on their own roots, never touched by the phylloxera louse that destroyed most of Europe's vineyards in the late 19th century. The geographical isolation and altitude of Tramonti simply kept the louse out. These are living history. The varieties are equally extraordinary. For whites: Pepella, Ginestra and Bianca Tenera — ancient, hyper-local varieties found almost nowhere else on earth, grown on volcanic soils and red clay at altitudes of 450 to 600 metres. For reds: Tintore di Tramonti — a unique biotype found only in this valley, producing wines of remarkable colour, bold minerality and a structure that has been compared to left-bank Bordeaux — alongside Piedirosso, Moscio, Sciascinoso and Olivella. Farming is certified organic. Yields are miniscule. Sulphur is never added to the wine. The vines are trained in giant pergolas known locally as tendone, supported by locally sourced chestnut poles, just as they have been for centuries. Total production is fewer than 6,200 bottles per year. The wines are unique: high in acid, expressive, free from convention. They speak poetically of rural Campania — of rugged mountains, sea breezes, volcanic soils and a way of farming that the modern wine world has almost entirely forgotten. To drink Monte di Grazia is to connect with a deep biology and history of a place. Aged solely in stainless steel, the bottle age works wonderfully, offering a rare experience in Italian wine - proper, old style, country-side material that is still fruity and fresh.

"The nose on the 2015 Monte di Grazia is incredibly fresh yet also packed with zesty bright red berry fruits, as citrus-inspired floral tones and hints of wild herbs come together, creating a lifted expression. On the palate, soft textures are contrasted by tart red and black fruits, as vibrant acids make the mouth water, giving life to spicy inner floral tones. The finish is long yet buzzing, with energy and freshness, resonating on savory herbs, bright red fruits, and hints of fine tannin.
